E.T. – What a classic!
For those who aren’t familiar with the great 1982 film, E.T. The Extra-terrestrial, here is a little description:
“E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (often referred to simply as E.T.) is a 1982 American science fiction film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison and starring Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, and Peter Coyote.
It tells the story of Elliott (played by Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed “E.T.”, who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help the extraterrestrial return home while attempting to keep it hidden from their mother and the government.” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial

Why Reese’s Pieces?
Most of you may have noticed that E.T. enjoyed Reese’s Pieces throughout the movie.
For those of you who are not familiar with the candy, you can read more about Reese’s Pieces on Wikipedia.
“Visionary filmmaker Steven Spielberg has always been a step ahead, and his 1982 alien romp E.T. blazed the trail for modern day product placement. The film was to have a scene where a boy coaxes an abandoned alien by leaving a trail of candy ground.
But not just any candy. The choice was made months prior to production when Spielberg looked for a partnership with a candy company that would promise promotion for his film. The very droppable M&M’s were selected, but the suits at Mars, Inc. refused to have their treats associated with E.T.
However, Hershey was not bothered, as they were hoping to bolster their Reese’s Pieces line. An agreement was made to produce a million dollars’ worth of advertisements for the film, and they plastered E.T.’s face right on the candy’s packaging.
Most Popular Scene:
The product is never mentioned by name here, though customers still had no problem identifying it by the package (as proven by 65% spike in Reese’s Pieces sales after the movie hit theaters).”
The aforementioned, quoted information was adapted from Cracked.com.
Are you impressionable?
Do you fee like eating some Reese’s Pieces right now?
Sadly, I am and yes I am eating some at the moment…
Cheers,

Oh definitely. I remember seeing that scene as a kid. M&Ms must have been kicking themselves afterwards. Bold product placement is now such a standard in blockbusters I forget sometimes it wasn’t always so overt. Good thing ET didn’t have a peanut allergy or he would have ended up in the ER……uh…*wince*
I agree with you there! Today there is a ton of product placement, but I find only some is as repetitive as this. For example, I felt Orangina was very obvious in Transporter. haha aw, I can only imagine the pain of a peanut allergy :(.
Interesting! It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen this movie, and to be honest, I don’t even remember the Reese’s Pieces part, but I kind of think of product placement as a more modern thing, so it’s interesting to know that it was in a movie that came out before I was born!
Do you think we noticed it less as kids? Or maybe we didn’t notice it as much because there was less product placement happening? You can hardly get through a TV show these days without seeing a blatant product placement.
Cool post!
Thanks Charlotte! I know I noticed, because I wanted that candy afterwards lol. You are right though, it is a thing for recent times that product placement is big. I think SS was way ahead of his time. haha I was born the year after, so now I feel very old LOL!
haha I was in ’84 so I’m right up there with ya!!
haha, thank God I’m not alone!! :p
I ALWAYS feel like Reese’s Pieces …always. Thanks for the walk down memory lane! I am definitely impressionable and craving Reece’s Peices. Thanks alot for that too! haha
LOL!! Sorry Lindsay, I couldn’t help it! I am glad I am not the only one, been muching on them for the whole weekend, lol should have brought some in!
If its good enough for ET, it’s good enough for me.
haha, we all know E.T. made this candy the coolest :p!
