What is Pi day?

Pi

What is Pi?

“Pi Day is an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (or 3/14 in the month/day date format), since 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.

Pi Day has been observed in many ways, from eating pie to discussing the significance of the number π.”* – *Adapted from Wikipedia

Where did Pi Day come from?

Larry Shaw

“The earliest known official or large-scale celebration of Pi Day was organized by Larry Shaw (Photo, right) in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist, with staff and public marching around one of its circular spaces, then consuming fruit pies.

The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations.*” – *Wikipedia

Awesome reasons for eating pie on Pi day?

  • A pie is a circle… (coincidence?)
  • It’s March 14th (3/14)
  • Albert Einstein’s Birthday is on March 14th (Happy Birthday to him!)
  • My birthday is on March 14th ;)!
  • It’s always a good time to eat Pie!

Can it get more awesome then that?

But it’s March 18th?

There is nothing wrong with a belated celebration.  Also, please refer to the last bullet in the aforementioned list :).

With that, I leave you with this awesome Pi Day pie chart from Shutterstock (very neat, totally check it out)!

Cheers,
Nahren

One could consume half a pi, and claim they only ate about 1.6 pieces. #rationalization
