What is a Pumpkin Pasty?

“Pumpkin Pasties are a wizarding food sold by the Honeydukes Express on the Hogwarts Express. They are sort of like a Cornish Pastie, but filled with pumpkin instead.

Harry Potter tried them for the first time on the Hogwarts Express, at the start of his first year, when he famously impressed Ron Weasley by buying everything from the trolley saying “we’ll take the lot”. He bought some of everything off the food trolley, and then shared his food with Ron Weasley.

Pumpkin pasties were referenced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Define Pasty

Pasties are a traditional baked meat and pastry pie. This indicates that Pumpkin Pasties are similar fare, using pumpkin as the filling instead of meat and vegetables.”*

No worries, you can make your very own pumpkin pasties!

Pumpkin Pasties

Makes 16 large pasties

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages of Pillsbury pie crust
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 extra beaten egg for egg wash (optional)

Directions:

  1. Take pie crust and cut into quarters.  You should end up with 16 triangles.
  2. Mix eggs, pumpkin, evaporated milk and brown sugar in a bowl until incorporated.
  3. Add cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt, stir well.
  4. Take a triangle of crust and pinch together two ends so that you are left with a cone.
  5. Scope in 2-3 tablespoons of pumpkin mixture into the cone and seal shut.
  6. Brush with egg wash – optional
  7. Repeat until all the crust is done.  You may have extra filling, you can always put it in a ramekin and bake it to enjoy.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes or until puffy and golden brown.
  9. Let sit at room temp or refrigerate for an hour before enjoying.

Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans

In a previous post, I touched base on Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.  I discussed existing flavours, experiences, all in a quick review with a lovely photo.  But, I think I’d like to explain Bertie Botts a little more in detail.

What are Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Bean?

The history in the Harry Potter series states that “Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans are one of the most popular sweets in the wizarding world. They are the same as Muggle (non-magical folk) jelly beans, except the range encompasses every flavour imaginable. There is also no way of telling for sure what flavour any given bean is without tasting it, although you can try and guess by the colour.

The inventor of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans was Bertie Bott, who created them in mid-20th century by mistake. He was planning on making tasty sweets from food, but accidentally made one taste like a dirty sock. He immediately recognised the sales potential of “a risk with every mouthful!””*

How did we get Bertie Bott’s here in the ‘Muggle’ world?

“In the real world, Jelly Belly released jelly beans with selected flavours from the series. There are currently 25 flavours available. The Bertie Bott’s candies may have been inspired by Jelly Belly, which produces jellybeans in unexpected flavours like jalapeno and encourages consumers to eat different-flavoured jellybeans in combination to create different flavours.”*  -*Adapted from Harry Potter Wiki.

Try, if you dare…

Today, you will have a harder time finding the interesting flavours from the times of Bertie Bott, but Jelly Belly does have lovely jelly beans with a very neat spectrum of flavours.  Give them a try, they are delicious and very realistic!

In regards to Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, I did try a few, rotten cheese, pencil shavings, black pepper… Very, um, different.  It wasn’t very tasty and the point was proven, “a risk with every mouthful”!

Monday’s Class Treat is Back – Licorice Wands from Harry Potter!

Upon reading the Harry Potter series and watching the movies, one of the first treats you hear about are licorice wands.  Licorice wands have appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

What is a licorice wand?

“A Liquorice Wand is a wizarding sweet that is presumably shaped like a wand. They are sold on the on the Hogwarts Express food trolley and at Honeydukes in Hogsmeade.”

History

  • 1991 – Harry Potter bought every sweet available from the food trolley on the Hogwarts Express, including some Liquorice Wands, as he had never had wizarding sweets before and wanted to try everything he could.
  • 1994 – On the Hogwarts Express, Ron thinks about buying one before realising that it was too expensive.
  • 1995 – “Liquorice wand” was one of several password guesses Harry Potter made when he wanted to gain entrance to the Headmaster’s office, so that he could tell Albus Dumbledore about a vision he had involving Lord Voldemort.
  • 1996 – Horace Slughorn invited several students to his compartment on the Hogwarts Express, in order to find new members for the Slug Club. He told his guests that he had brought his own lunch, as he recalled the trolley being “heavy on Liquorice Wands,” and felt that such things would not sit well with “a poor old man’s digestive system.””*

How to make your own Licorice wands!

Licorice Wands

Licorice wands are very easy to make!  It is mainly up to your creativity, You can dip licorice in milk or dark chocolate if you prefer, with or without sprinkles, or just plain licorice with a paper handle, the sky is the limit!

This is my take on licorice wands.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Melt white chocolate chips/candy melts in a double boiler until smooth and fully melted.
  2. Dip and twist 1/4 of the licorice in melted chocolate and tap off excess.
  3. Roll in sprinkles or sugar until fully covered.
  4. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheet and refrigerate for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Take the licorice wands out of the refrigerator and let them get to room temperature.
  6. Share and enjoy!

Licorice wands should be enjoyed freshly made but will last about three days at room temperature or a week in the fridge, in an air tight container.

Monday Class Treat – Saltine Toffee

Happy Monday #BSMRCCE!

It’s Monday and you know what that means… Monday Class Treat!  This week’s treat is Saltine Toffee!

I’ve been trying to bring in a variety of items for you to try.  This week I’ve brought you a candy that I make a lot around the holidays for gifts. This recipe normally calls for a sprinkling of nuts on top, but sadly, this week, I ran out of nuts so I’ve used coconut as a substitution.

Recipe Names

This recipe has a few names associated with it.  Such as:

  • Toffee Bark
  • White Trash Toffee
  • Saltine Toffee

The one I found it under may not be the most PC of names, which is why we will be calling it saltine toffee for class purposes :).

Recipe

I found this recipe on the Yum Sugar website. This recipe is very flexible and you can make many changes and alternations as you like.

Try it out, it’s really easy and the results are addictive!  The recipe for ‘saltine toffee‘ can be found here.

Recipes can be a lot easier then you would think…

I’ve made this recipe a few times, it’s simple, rich and has layers of flavour.  I tend to decorate the top, it makes for easier handling and gives it a bit of colour aside from a solid sheet of chocolatey goodness.

When you have a recipe like this, I feel you can adapt it anyway you like, you just have to use your imagination.
